Arkansas Moves to Ban GLBTs from Fostering and Adopting

Arkansas Secretary of State Charlie Daniels has certified a proposed act aimed at effectively banning gays and lesbians from becoming foster or adoptive parents clearing it to appear on the fall ballot in Arkansas. The measure is very similar to a bill that went through the Arkansas legislature in 2007. Senate bill 959 was passed in the state Senate only to die later in the Arkansas House of Representatives' Judiciary Committee.

A gunman opened fire at the Arkansas Democratic Party headquarters in Little Rock on Wednesday, shooting and killing state 48-year-old state party chairman Bill Gwatney. The gunman, identified as 50-year-old Timonthy Dale Johnson, was later chased down and shot by police before being apprehended.

Former Governor of Arkansas Mike Huckabee may be facing a heavy slew of losses on Super Tuesday, but not in his home state. Huckabee has been declared the winner of the Arkansas Republican primary. On the Democratic side, former Arkansas First Lady Hillary Clinton also claimed victory in the state.

Arkansas High Court Lifts Ban on Gay Foster Parents

The Arkansas Supreme Court unaimously ruled yesterday that there is no connection between a child’s well-being and the sexual orientation of a parent, deeming discrimination against gay households in foster care unconstitutional. The ruling, which upholds a 2004 lower court decision against the ban, said the ban was "an attempt to legislate for the General Assembly with respect to public morality."

The 18-year-old suspect in a gay bar attack in Massachusetts last week died earlier this week of wounds suffered over the weekend in a shootout with Arkansas police officers. Police say Jacob D. Robida, who was wanted on suspicion of attacking several members of the New Bedford gay bar Puzzles last week, killed a police officer and a woman he was traveling with before being shot by police.

ACLU Urges Arkansas Supreme Court to Uphold Gay Foster Parent Ruling

Joined by an array of national child advocacy organizations, the American Civil Liberties Union has filed a brief asking the Arkansas Supreme Court to uphold an earlier court decision striking down a state regulation that banned gay people and anyone living in a household with a gay adult from being foster parents in the state.

The Arkansas Department of Human Services has announced it will appeal a judge's ruling that the state had improperly banned gay men and lesbians from serving as foster parents. The agency filed papers with the Arkansas Court of Appeals on Thursday to contend a ruling last year by Pulaski County Circuit Judge Tim Fox that the state ban on gay foster parents was unconstitutional.

Two former Little Rock radio station employees have been sentenced to community service and $250 in fines after pleading guilty to charges they distributed a gay porn video to a minor during a gay pride parade last year. The radio station for which Beard and Brown worked at the time terminated the pair following the parade.
